Byron Locust, a former Cherokee Central Schools football player, passed away in a Big Cove accident in January 2026.
He was a superhero with the warmest smile that lit up every room.
Byron Locust was a standout graduate from the Cherokee High School class of 2018.
He was a 6-foot force on the Men’s Varsity Football team and played under the guidance of Coach Craig Barker. His athletic talent was clear, and his true strength was his character.
His teammates will never forget the excitement of watching him stretch out for a spectacular one-arm tackle. He was the ultimate teammate and an even better friend.

Cherokee Central Schools is heartbroken as we mourn the passing of Byron Locust, Class of 2018.
This is a profound loss for our school community, and one that is difficult to put into words. Our staff and students are deeply saddened as we process this heartbreaking news.

Byron Locust was a beloved son, brother, partner, and friend who passed away, leaving a void that cannot be filled.
He left the world unexpectedly in January 2026.
Byron was a proud son of Elisha Wildcatt, raised alongside his sister, Laila, and brother Athie in Cherokee, North Carolina. His brother looked up to him as an idol and guiding light.
He carried the pride of his community onto the football field, where he played with the heart of a warrior and the spirit of a true athlete.
His strength and dedication were an inspiration to many who followed in his footsteps.

Byron had a deep and loving relationship with for over seven years.
Brianna extends her eternal gratitude to his parents for sharing their remarkable son with her, a gift for which she will forever be thankful.
I know you don’t want me hurting and want me to be strong, but it’s hard. I miss you so much, I don’t know how I’m gonna live without you. You were my pudds, my baby, my honey. Byron was the biggest softy, a man with teddy bear tendencies and a heart of pure gold.
He was a quiet, gentle giant whose mighty presence was effortlessly softened by a smile, inherited straight from his momma, that could light up any room.
All who knew him will miss his gentle spirit, unwavering love for his family, and the quiet joy he brought. His memory will be carried as a blessing, a warm smile in our hearts, and the echo of a kindness that touched so many.
The family will announce memorial services at a later date. In this time of profound loss, they ask to hold them in your thoughts and prayers.
