Chicago Teen Caught Trespassing at Gym Just Wanted to Play Basketball: Officer Pays Fee, Inspires Two-Year Gifted Membership!

A Chicago teen sneaked into XSport Fitness in Skokie to play basketball and faced trespassing charges, but a kind Officer paid $150 for his gym access rather than arresting him.
Vincent Gonzalez, a 15-year-old Chicago teen, repeatedly sneaked into the basketball court at XSport Fitness in Skokie during the summer.
Turns out that, reportedly, his family could no longer afford the gym membership fees, so his access had expired.
Since Vincent just wanted to keep playing basketball, he didn’t stop despite the gym staff catching him multiple times and warning him to stop. Eventually, the gym called the police for trespassing.
When Officer Mario Valenti arrived, he could have arrested Vincent. Instead, he took the time to talk to the teen and learned that Vincent simply wanted to play basketball.
Officer Valenti understood Vincent’s family couldn’t pay for a new membership and decided to help. He offered $150 of his own money to cover a few months of gym access for Vincent.
This kind act caught the attention of the gym’s corporate office. They were so moved by Officer Valenti’s generosity that they decided to do something even bigger.
The gym took Officer Valenti’s $150 and used it to start a two-year membership for Vincent, worth $718. They paid the rest themselves so that Vincent could play basketball at the gym without any worry for two years.

For Officer Valenti, who has been a police officer for 20 years, this was about his role in keeping a young person on the right path.
He said he’d rather see kids like Vincent on the court than getting into trouble on the streets.
Following the circulation of the news, almost everyone appreciated the Officer’s generous act. One comment read:
Exceptional officer, thank you🙏❤️ this kid will remember you for the rest of his life.
Some appreciated the Officer’s upbringing, writing, “The cop was raised right by his parents. Plus he had common sense about the minor. Good people are still around.“
The Skokie Police Department shared that stories like this don’t often make the news, but they show the kindness and compassion officers bring to their work every day.
Vincent now has two years to chase his basketball dreams, thanks to an officer who saw a kid who just needed a chance.
