The Athens community is mourning the tragic death of 22-year-old Antonio “AJ” Jewell, a 2026 graduate of Clarke Central High School.

Authorities confirmed that Jewell was found deceased Friday night at The View at NODA apartment complex near downtown Athens.

The Athens-Clarke County Police Department is currently investigating the circumstances surrounding his death.

AJ Jewell left a lasting mark on Clarke Central High School as a dedicated student-athlete who represented the Gladiator spirit with pride.

Clarke Central Athletics expressed deep sorrow in an official statement, saying,

“AJ was a proud Gladiator who represented Clarke Central with heart and dedication as a student-athlete. His spirit, kindness, and energy will be remembered by all who knew him.”

The school extended heartfelt condolences to his mother, Mrs. Latoya Jewell, and the entire Jewell family, urging the community to keep them in their thoughts and prayers during this heartbreaking time.

Once a Gladiator, always a Gladiator,” the message concluded, reflecting the school’s enduring bond with its students.

As news of AJ’s death spread, tributes flooded social media from friends, teachers, teammates, and community members.

Many described him as kind, wise beyond his years, and full of life.

David Vandiver Brown, who knew AJ personally, shared,

“Each and every moment with AJ was an absolute honor. He could humble you, make you laugh, and inspire you all within seconds. This world lost a wonderful person.”

Dozens of others offered prayers and condolences to his mother, Latoya, expressing their grief and disbelief.

God brought home such a sweet and amazing angel,” wrote one mourner. Another added,

“Even if I never met AJ, hearing about his impact breaks my heart. He meant so much to Clarke Central.”

Gardenview Funeral Chapel confirmed AJ Jewell’s passing and asked the public to keep the Jewell and Brown families in their prayers.

The chapel stated that funeral arrangements will be announced soon.

Friends and loved ones have filled the funeral home’s online page with condolences and words of comfort.

May the Jewell and Brown family find peace in the love that surrounds them,” one read.

Community advocate Tiffany ThaChange also addressed the tragedy, calling on parents and community members to unite in protecting young lives.

As mothers, we have to cover each other in times like this,” she wrote.

“We are losing too many Black sons to death and jail. No parent deserves this pain.”

She urged the community to move beyond mourning and take action through mentoring, youth programs, and open conversations with young people.

Don’t just pray for our city,” she added. Get active and stay active.

Antonio “AJ” Jewell’s death has left a deep void in Athens and among those who watched him grow into a young man full of promise.

Known for his infectious energy and compassion, AJ embodied the true spirit of a Gladiator — resilient, kind, and inspiring.

As the investigation continues, the Clarke Central community and the entire Athens area stand together in grief, remembering AJ not only for his athletic talent but for the love, laughter, and strength he brought to everyone around him.

“Once a Gladiator, always a Gladiator.”
