Coach Turned Police Sergeant Brian Keith Baptist’s Death Marks the Loss of a Beloved Law Enforcement Officer
Celebration of life planned as Jacksonville honors the late sergeant.

Brian Keith Baptist, a respected Jacksonville Police Sergeant, died unexpectedly on Sunday, September 21, 2026, in Middleton, Wisconsin. He was 49.
Jacksonville Police Department confirmed his passing, noting that Baptist suffered a medical emergency while with friends, and preliminary reports indicate he died of natural causes.
Baptist’s in law enforcement spanned over 20 years. He joined the Jacksonville Police Department in November 2004 and rose through the ranks, eventually serving as a Sergeant from June 22, 2014, until his passing.
He earned letters of commendation for exceptional service in 2011 and 2026, was named Officer of the Month in February 2018, and contributed to specialized units including the Special Response Team, ILEAS Mobile Field Force, and the Jacksonville Street Crimes Unit.
Baptist had planned to retire in November 2026.
Born on October 17, 1975, in Jacksonville, Illinois, Baptist was the son of Frank “Buzz” and Barbara Baptist.
He graduated from Jacksonville High School in 1993, where he excelled in golf, baseball, and basketball, before attending Lewis and Clark Community College and MacMurray College, earning a degree in education in 1998.
During college, he achieved recognition as a 1997 NCAA conference champion in golf and played as a kicker for the MacMurray Highlander football team, contributing to their 1997 conference championship.
Before dedicating himself to law enforcement, Baptist coached baseball at Jacksonville High School and taught behavioral disorder classes.
He briefly returned to MacMurray College to pursue endorsements in special education and health before committing to a law enforcement career.
Beyond his professional achievements, Baptist was known for his infectious smile, sense of humor, and devotion to family and friends.
A lifelong Cubs fan, he loved sunsets, Lake Jacksonville, Mexican food, margaritas, Hawaiian shirts, National Lampoon’s Vacation, hunting, fantasy football, and spending quality time with his wife and children.
Baptist married Jennifer Stevens on September 28, 2001, at Bethel Baptist Church in Chandlerville.
Together, they had two children, Makenna Nicole (born 2003) and Daxton Keith (born 2005).
He is also survived by his mother, Barbara Baptist, sister, Brenda Protz Silveira, in-laws, nieces, nephews, extended family, and many close friends.
He was preceded in death by his father, Frank “Buzz” Baptist, and his niece, Jenna Protz.
Jacksonville Mayor Andy Ezard and city officials honored Baptist’s life during a city council meeting, with a moment of silence held in his memory.
Community members took to social media to express their condolences, celebrating his dedication to law enforcement and the Jacksonville community.
A celebration of life will take place on Sunday, September 28, at the Midwest Athletic Center (MacMurray College gymnasium) at 409 Hardin Avenue in Jacksonville.
Friends and family may visit from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., with the Celebration of Life beginning at 1:30 p.m. Attendees are encouraged to wear Hawaiian shirts or their favorite sports team apparel.
Memorial contributions can be made to the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 125 or the Baptist Education Fund to support the continuing education of his children.
Brian Keith Baptist’s life and career left an enduring mark on Jacksonville, and his memory will continue to inspire those who knew him.
