Tonight, tragedy struck the Lewis family when Cooper Lewis was shot in a terrifying incident at his home.
Stephanie Wilson Lewis shared the harrowing experience, revealing the severity of her son’s injuries and the critical medical care he received.
According to Stephanie, Cooper was immediately life-flighted to Sacred Heart Hospital after the shooting.
Upon arrival, he was intubated and coughing up blood. Doctors quickly inserted a chest tube, draining approximately 500ccs, before rushing him into emergency surgery.
Surgeons worked tirelessly to repair two holes in his stomach, address spleen damage, and assess injuries to his pancreas, left lung, and kidney—possibly even his adrenal gland.
The bullet remains lodged near his spine but will only be removed if it poses a risk.
Cooper’s abdomen was left open with a wound vacuum to allow for rapid follow-up procedures as needed.
The medical team described the surgery as “damage control,” emphasizing that Cooper faces a long and challenging recovery.
Stephanie shared the emotional toll of the event, saying,
“The nurse in me trusts the amazing team at Sacred Heart completely. But the momma in me… she’s broken. Getting that phone call—hearing your child has been shot—is something no parent should ever have to experience.”
She asked the community to keep Cooper in their thoughts and prayers, describing him as “strong-willed, hard-headed, and a fighter.”
The response from friends, family, and the community has been overwhelming.
Hundreds have commented on social media, offering prayers, emotional support, and messages of encouragement.
Among the responses, many expressed disbelief at the event, shared their hopes for Cooper’s full recovery, and offered practical help to the Lewis family during this challenging time.
Authorities have reported that the suspected shooter is currently in custody, but details surrounding the incident remain unclear.
The Lewis family continues to focus on Cooper’s care and recovery while leaning on the outpouring of support from their community.
Stephanie’s message closes with a heartfelt plea: “Please, please keep our boy in your prayers. He’s a fighter, and we’re holding onto that with everything we have.”
