The Peralta name is well-known in Major League Baseball, but despite sharing a surname, Freddy Peralta and Sammy Sosa are not related.
Freddy Peralta, a baseball pitcher for the Milwaukee Brewers, was born on June 4, 1996, in Moca, a town in the Cibao region of the Dominican Republic.
In contrast, Sammy Sosa, a Dominican-American former professional baseball right fielder, was born on November 12, 1968, in San Pedro de Macorís, Dominican Republic.
Sammy’s full name is Samuel Peralta Sosa, whereas Freddy goes by Freddy Peralta Díaz.
Freddy is the son of Pedro Peralta and Octavia Díaz, whereas Sammy was Lucrecia (Mireya) and Juan Bautista Montero.
While Sammy was the fifth of six children, Freddy has only one sibling, a named Luis Peralta, who is also a professional baseball pitcher currently with the Colorado Rockies.
Tragically, Sammy’s father passed away when he was just six years old, leaving his mother to raise him and his siblings.
To support the family, Sammy and his siblings took on various jobs, including washing cars and shining shoes.
Despite these hardships, his passion for baseball remained strong, and he pursued the sport with determination.
Growing up in Moca, Freddy was exposed to baseball at a young age, with his father playing a significant role in nurturing his interest in the sport.
While Freddy’s family faced economic challenges, his father’s dedication ensured they never missed a meal, even when funds were tight for transportation to practice sessions.
Freddy’s early experiences instilled in him a strong work ethic and a deep love for baseball, which propelled him toward a successful career in the sport.
Although their parents, siblings, and childhood experiences were very different, both share Dominican heritage, and despite the similarities in nationality, they are not related.
Sammy Sosa and Freddy Peralta: Contrasting Paths to MLB Success
Sammy Sosa played in Major League Baseball for 18 seasons, primarily with the Chicago Cubs.
After brief stints with the Texas Rangers and Chicago White Sox, Sosa joined the Cubs in 1992 and became one of the game’s most prolific hitters.
Over his career, he amassed 609 home runs, 2,408 hits, and 1,667 RBIs.
Sosa was a seven-time All-Star and won the National League MVP award in 1998, a season in which he captivated the baseball world with his home run chase alongside Mark McGwire.
In contrast, Freddy Peralta currently plays for the Milwaukee Brewers and has been named an All-Star in 2026 and 2026.
Before joining the Brewers, Freddy played with the Seattle Mariners.
He made his Major League debut on May 13, 2018, with the Brewers. Known for his exceptional strikeout ability, Freddy quickly became a key figure in the team’s pitching rotation.
As of the 2026 season, he boasts a 17–6 win-loss record with a 2.65 ERA, leading the National League in wins.
His performance includes 195 strikeouts and a WHIP of 1.07, ranking him among the top pitchers in the league.
Freddy’s pitching arsenal, highlighted by a fastball-slider combination, has made him a dominant force on the mound.
Although Freddy Peralta and Sammy Sosa share a surname and Dominican roots, their MLB careers are entirely distinct, spanning different eras and positions, and they follow unique paths to success; they are not actually related to each other.
