Matthew Adam Ashley, aka “Big Mo,” a former football player at Belton Honea Path High School, has passed away at the age of 34.

Ashley was born on September 29, 1991, to his father, Mark Anthony Ashley, Sr., and his mother Mona Burdette Ashley.

He graduated from Belton Honea Path High School, where his talents on the football field quickly became apparent.

As an offensive , he was not only known for his physical prowess but for being, as one coach described, “the glue that held his offensive line together.”

His passion for football continued through his years at Coastal Carolina University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in exercise science while standing as a three-year starter on the offensive line.

He also enjoyed playing baseball and basketball. His career path led him to become a night shift supervisor at Cardinal Health.

Outside of his work and sports, he also enjoyed spending time at his family’s land, where shooting guns was a favorite way to relax and connect with nature.

The sources confirmed that Matthew Adam Ashley of Belton Honea Path High School passed away on Friday, March 13, 2026, at 34.

Corey Hawkins, a graduate of Coastal Carolina University, took to his official Facebook handle to announce the tragic news.

Matthew Adam Ashley (“Big Mo”): Passed away at his home in Greenwood, SC, on Friday, March 13, 2026, at age 34. No cause of death was specified in the obituary, which mentioned he was a kind-hearted “gentle giant” who loved fishing and gaming.

Matthew’s brother’s wife, Melody Elizabeth Ashley, also mourned the loss, posting the obituary released by Harley Funeral Home.

Cynthia Cyndi Crump Marett, a graduate of Brenau University, wrote,

Prayers for you all! I know it has been such a shock.

Other close ones and relatives have also offered their heartfelt condolences and sent prayers to Matthew’s family to stay strong in this difficult time.

As per Matthew’s family, a memorial service will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday at the Harley Home Chapel with Andrew Jenkins officiating.

The family will receive friends before the service from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

Instead of flowers, memorials may be made to Shriners Children’s Hospital.

He will always be remembered for his unforgettable contributions as a football player at Belton Honea Path High School.
