Horizon Elementary School PE Coach Todd Funkhouser Passes Away After Suffering Cardiac Event While Hiking in Great Falls

The Horizon Elementary School Community and the town of Inwood, Virginia, are mourning the loss of beloved P.E. teacher Todd Funkhouser.
Todd passed away unexpectedly after suffering a cardiac event while hiking the Billy Goat Trail in Great Falls, which was also his favorite spot to spend time.

Many are left shocked learning Todd’s death
His laughter, kindness, and dedication will be remembered by many countless individuals who knew him not just as a colleague and family member but as a person.
His sense of humor, honesty, and loyalty made him a cornerstone of what his colleagues fondly referred to as “The Dream Team.”
“Todd was amazing with the students,” one former colleague shared. “The Horizon families absolutely adored him. He would drop everything to help someone in need and always knew how to make people laugh, sometimes at the most inappropriate, perfect moments.”
Another former student also shared her story with the late Teacher,
you were such an amazing light to me in high school. You always made algebraic equations as fun as they could be. You made sure we were having fun while learning. I battled bullies in high school and you were one of the few teachers that made sure i never felt alone. I think I speak for everyone who ever had the privilege of having you as a teacher that your influence made our lives better! Thank you for being the amazing person you were. May you rest in peace.
Lauren and her mom have also thanked every individual for honoring Todd, who was affectionately known as Mr. Funk/Uncle T/T-Fun.
On top of that, they have extended the deepest condolences to all affected by Todd’s passing.
The love and disbelief following the sudden death of Todd Funk have been overwhelming, suggesting how many lives he touched as a teacher, mentor, coach, and friend.
He made every student feel seen, valued, and capable, and his friends will remember him as “exuberant, gregarious, and simply adored.”
His legacy will remain on in the countless lives, as one of his friends said, ” one friend said, ‘The world is a little dimmer without him, but infinitely brighter because he was here.’”
