Cyrus Johnson, a senior at Mount Vernon High School basketball player in Iowa, tragically passed away in December 2026.
As his family remains silent in this heartbreaking time, the cause of Cyrus Johnson’s death has not been publicly disclosed.

Cyrus Johnson was , remembered as both a varsity basketball player and a gifted performer in the school’s speech and theater program.
After returning to basketball for his senior year, he earned a spot on the varsity team.
Wearing jersey number 34, he scored his first basket on Senior Night in February 2026.
Beyond the court, Cyrus was a four-time All-State nominee in the MVHS Speech Program, where he co-led acclaimed productions, Antigone.
His career at Mount Vernon was defined not only by athletic and artistic achievements but also by his involvement in the marching band.
He was a drummer in the Mount Vernon marching band. His involvement in music added another dimension to his high school career.
Cyrus’ passing at this young age left a void in the hearts of his family, teammates, and the entire Mount Vernon community.

Our hearts go out to the family of Cyrus Johnson and all the members of the Mount Vernon Fine Arts department who are hurting today. Cy was a huge part of our band program as a member and instructor. Cy brought joy and beauty to everything he touched and he will be greatly missed.

In the wake of his death, the community has come together to honor his memory and support his family through a GoFundMe campaign.
Bailey Low organized this campaign, “,” to help his family with funeral costs and travel expenses.
They also ensure that the excess fund will be donated to a music charity so kids can enjoy music as Cyrus did.
