Wrestling Coach Robert Jones’ Death at Age 86 Leaves a Legacy of Teaching, Service, and Community Spirit

Robert K. Jones, a longtime Allegheny Township resident, died on Monday, September 8, 2026, at the age of 86.

His has brought deep sadness to his family, friends, former students, and community members who knew him for his dedication, kindness, and passion for teaching.

Born on October 1, 1938, to the late Kenneth and Gladys Ewing Jones, Robert grew up in Blairsville before settling in Allegheny Township, where he has lived for the past 56 years.

He built a life rooted in education, service, and family, leaving a lasting impact on those around him.

Robert proudly served his country as a Navy Veteran, where he also played baseball for his ship.

After his service, he committed his career to education. He worked as a psychology, law, and economics teacher in the Burrell School District until his retirement in 1996.

Beyond the classroom, he became the first wrestling coach for Burrell, helping to establish the program and guide students in both academics and athletics.

Known for his mechanical skills, Robert often helped others by fixing whatever he could.

He loved teaching and continued to explore his passion for religious studies throughout his life.

Outside of work, he was a loyal fan of the Pittsburgh Pirates and college football.

Robert shared 57 years of marriage with his wife, Kathleen Barbara Hill Jones, who stood by his side throughout his life.

Together, they raised two sons: Darren (Tricia Shank) Jones of Lower Burrell and Ryan (Molly) Jones of Fairfax, Virginia. His role as a grandfather brought him immense joy, as he cherished his grandchildren Ava, Ellie, Zack, and Cooper, along with step-grandchild Alex Krnacik.

He also leaves behind his brother, Ernest (Nancy) Jones of Virginia.

Family and friends will gather to honor Robert’s life during visitation hours on Thursday, September 11, 2026, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Rusiewicz Funeral Home, 3124 Leechburg Road, Lower Burrell.

A funeral service will take place the following day, Friday, September 12, at 11:00 a.m. at the same location.

Burial will follow in Brookland Cemetery, Allegheny Township, with military honors conducted by the Vandergrift Veterans Honor Guard.

Robert Jones’ death marks the loss of a devoted teacher, veteran, husband, father, and grandfather.

His legacy will continue to live on through his family, students, and the community he served with generosity and heart.
