Phil Hughes, the head football coach at Canyon High School in Anaheim, California, has officially resigned from his position, citing a desire to spend more time with his family.

His decision to step down reflects a personal choice to prioritize family life after years of dedicated service to the school’s athletic program.

While he has not announced any new professional plans, Hughes highlighted that his immediate focus will be on reconnecting with loved ones and enjoying a more balanced lifestyle.

He was hired as Canyon’s head football coach in February 2026, succeeding Josh Waybright, who stepped down after one season due to health issues following a car accident.

Over his four-year tenure at Canyon, Hughes compiled a 17-25 overall record, highlighted by a 9-3 campaign in 2026, which tied the school record for most wins in a season.

Even in his final season of 2026, despite a 3-7 overall record, Canyon managed a 2-1 league finish, resulting in a three-way tie for first place in the North Hills League.

Prior to taking the helm at Canyon, he spent seven seasons as an assistant coach at Sunny Hills High School in Fullerton, California, from 2015 to 2026.

During his tenure, the team posted a 17-25 record with a standout 2026 season in which Canyon went 9-3.

Moreover, his most notable achievement came in 2019, when Sunny Hills captured the CIF-SS Division 8 championship.

After these years of dedicated coaching and commitment, Hil has chosen to step away to focus on family.

His decision to step away from the sidelines reflects a choice to prioritize family over football.
